How to get involved with Plastic Free Scotland in 2020

Plastic Free Scotland is people-powered! Our network is a way to link up with other individuals, community groups and campaigns working towards the same goal of reducing single-use plastic in Scotland.

2020 is a big year for plastic and climate change in Scotland. Firstly, the Circular Economy Bill which has action on single-use plastic, recycling and waste will move through the Scottish Parliament which gives us a big opportunity to push politicians for action on plastic. Then in November, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) will see world leaders come to Glasgow to discuss the current climate crisis and what we can do to solve it.

This gives us lots of different opportunities for change this year. So here’s some ways you can get involved with Plastic Free Scotland in 2020.

Join a local group

Did you know we have 7 local groups across Scotland? We have groups in Edinburgh, Dunfermline, West Dunbartonshire, Linlithgow, Portobello, Helensburgh and The Borders. Each group is completely different so there is lots to get involved in. Some groups hold regular meetings, others share plastic free tips on social media, and some talk to businesses about reducing their plastic. Click here to get involved in those groups or to find out how to set up a group in your own local area.

Raise plastic issues with your local politicians

Speaking to your local councillor, MSP or MP is a great way to raise awareness of plastic pollution and how it links to climate change. And as the Circular Economy Bill moves through the Scottish Parliament over the next 8 months, there’s not a better time to speak to your local MSP about what can be done to reduce plastic. If this is something you’d like to do then get in touch with us at and we can help you draft letters or arrange meetings.

Volunteer for Plastic Free Scotland

We’re a very, very small team here at Plastic Free Scotland and are always looking for extra help. In particular we’d love to hear from people who want to help us with social media, blog content, campaigns and events. If you’re interested in helping us in any of those areas then please drop us an email and we can chat.

Become a Plastic Free Scotland campaigner

Is there a burning plastic issue that you would like to campaign on? We’re always open to ideas about new campaigns around plastic, especially ones that are Scottish. Join our PFS Campaign Network group on Facebook to speak to other campaigners or drop us an email at the above address with your ideas.

Organise a beach clean or litter pick

Is there any area in your local town that suffers from plastic pollution? Then why not organise a local clean up in your area. Not only is it a good way to get rid of all the rubbish from the streets or beaches, but it’s also a fun way to meet like-minded people. If you want to set something up then let us know and we’ll share it across our social media platforms for you to encourage others to come along.

If you have any other suggestions or ways you would like to help Plastic Free Scotland in 2020 then please just email us on and we can discuss ways to get involved.
